Where the 230 lb figure comes from

Almost every water intake calculator on the first page of Google uses the same rule: two thirds of your bodyweight in ounces. At 230 lbs that is 230 × 0.67 = 154 oz, or 4,557 mL. It is arithmetic, not a study. The rule scales in a perfectly straight line with bodyweight, no controlled trial has established it as a requirement, and it says nothing about what you ate, how hard you trained or how warm the room is. We show it because it is the answer people are looking for when they search this — and we show it next to something better sourced.

What the published figures actually say

The US National Academies (NASEM, formerly the IOM) set an adequate total water intake of 3.7 litres a day for men and 2.7 litres for women. Total water includes what comes from food, which is roughly a fifth of typical intake, so the amount to actually drink is nearer 3.0 and 2.2 litres — 100 oz and 73 oz. Those are population averages for healthy adults in a temperate climate, and they do not adjust for bodyweight at all, which is exactly why a linear rule and a flat reference figure drift apart at the ends of the range. At 230 lbs the bodyweight number comes out +54% against the figure for men and +111% against the figure for women. Neither is a target you have failed by missing.

When 230 lbs needs more than 154 oz

The table above adjusts for the two things that move the number most, exercise and heat. Here is what those are worth — and what the table deliberately leaves out:

  • Exercise. Roughly 350–500 mL (12–16 oz) per 30 minutes of hard effort, in line with ACSM-style guidance. This page uses the low end. A long session in the heat will beat it comfortably, and weighing yourself before and after is the only way to get a figure that is actually yours.
  • Altitude. Above about 2,500 m you lose extra water through breathing and increased urine output — on the order of a litre a day. The full calculator has a toggle for it.
  • Illness. Fever, vomiting and diarrhoea can raise losses well beyond anything on this page.
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding and medication. Diuretics, kidney disease and heart failure all change fluid needs, sometimes in the direction of drinking less. That is the point where a calculator stops being useful and a clinician starts.

Turning 154 oz into an actual day

In practice, 9.1 standard 16.9 oz bottles spread across the day is the workable version of this number. A split that suits most people at 230 lbs: a glass on waking, one with each meal, one before and one after anything that makes you sweat, and the last one an hour before bed rather than as you get into it. Front-loading the day beats trying to catch up at 10pm, which mostly just wakes you at 3am.
