Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are emergencies, and drinking litres of plain water without salt on a long hot day carries its own risk. This tool plans a day walk — it does not replace a map, a forecast, or a clinician.

Water is one kilogram per litre, and there is nothing you can do about that. It is usually the heaviest single item in a day pack.

The baseline is roughly 400 mL an hour easy, 600 moderate and 800 strenuous, plus about 2% more per degree above 20 °C and 150 mL for every 300 m climbed. Those are planning figures, not measurements of you — real sweat rates during exercise span something like 0.3 to 2.4 litres an hour between individuals.

- With no resupply, every millilitre starts on your back: 3.5 L, 7.6 lb. Pack around that figure, not around the bottle you happened to grab.
- If you are unsure whether a spring runs this season, plan as though it does not and treat finding it as a bonus.
- Front-loading helps: drink half a litre in the hour before you set off. It weighs the same in you as in the pack, and you start level rather than already behind.
Before you trust this number
- In desert, exposed ridgeline, sand, snow travel or anything above about 2,500 m, add 25–50% and treat part of it as a reserve you do not plan to drink.
- Water sources dry up. Seasonal creeks, springs and troughs are all plausible and all fallible.
- This calculation assumes you can refill or turn back. If neither is true — a one-way traverse, a long committing descent — carry the full day plus a margin.
- Children, older walkers and anyone taking diuretics or blood pressure medication need their own plan, not a share of yours.
- Confusion, clumsiness, clammy skin or sweating that stops in the heat are emergencies. Stop, get shade, cool actively, and get help.
Why hikers under-carry water
Almost nobody leaves a trailhead thinking they brought too much water. Plenty of people finish the day with an empty bottle and two hours still to walk. Three things drive that. Water is the heaviest useful thing in the pack, so it is the first item people talk themselves out of. Thirst lags behind loss, so by the time you notice it you are usually already down a percent of body mass. And effort is invisible on a map: four hours with 900 m of climb in August is not the same day as four flat hours in April, but the plan you made over breakfast treats them alike.
That is why this page asks for heat, effort and ascent rather than handing everyone the same two litres. It is still an estimate built from population averages. One litre weighs one kilogram
This is the trade-off that makes hiking water different from every other hydration question: the water you carry costs you effort, and that effort makes you need more water. A litre is a kilogram, 2.2 lb. Four litres is 4 kg, about 9 lb — heavier than most one-person tents, and enough to change how a long climb feels.
So the right answer is rarely “carry all of it”. It is usually enough to reach the next reliable water, plus a reserve you would be glad of if that water has gone. On a well-watered trail with a filter, that can mean walking all day with a litre and a half in the pack. In the desert it means the whole day’s supply from the first step, and the number above is a floor rather than a target: the US National Park Service tells summer hikers in the Grand Canyon’s inner corridor to plan on roughly half a litre to a litre every hour, with salty food alongside it.
Treating water on route versus carrying it
A filter or a bottle of chemical drops weighs a fraction of the water it saves you carrying, which is why almost every long-distance walker owns one. The catch is that a source has to actually be there. Springs run seasonally, creeks dry out in a hot summer, and the blue line on a map is a claim someone made once, not a promise. Before relying on a refill, look for a trail report from this season, and carry enough to reach the one after it.
Treat everything you collect. Hollow-fibre filters around 0.1 micron deal with bacteria and protozoa, including giardia and cryptosporidium. Chlorine dioxide and iodine also cover viruses, which matters more in some regions than others, but chemical treatment is slow against cryptosporidium — up to four hours, against about thirty minutes for everything else. Boiling works everywhere and costs fuel and time. Whichever you pick, add the standing-still minutes to your plan for the day.
Signs of dehydration on the trail
The early signals are dull rather than dramatic: dark urine and less of it, a headache building through the afternoon, legs that feel flat on a climb you would normally cruise. Then comes the dangerous part, which is that judgement degrades before you feel dramatic. Irritability, clumsy foot placement and slow decisions on route finding are all common at around 2% of body mass lost, the point the American College of Sports Medicine flags for measurable performance decline.
One confusing case is worth knowing. Nausea, headache and disorientation after hours of drinking a lot of plain water with little food can be too much water rather than too little — hyponatremia, where blood sodium falls too far. The distinguishing signs are copious clear urine and a history of heavy plain-water drinking. Salty food and rest help; if symptoms are severe or worsening, that is an evacuation, not a water break.
Electrolytes on long days in heat
Sweat carries sodium — roughly 0.5 to 1.8 grams per litre, varying a lot between people. On walks of two or three hours, plain water plus normal trail food covers it comfortably and electrolyte tablets are mostly a preference. Past roughly four hours in real heat, or if you are a salty sweater with white crust on your cap and pack straps, replacing sodium starts to matter: an electrolyte tab, a sports drink, or simply salted nuts, crisps and jerky, which do the job perfectly well and are more pleasant at hour seven than another flavoured tablet.
Potassium and magnesium get far more marketing attention than the evidence supports for a day hike; sodium is the one that moves in meaningful quantities. And if you are on a sodium-restricted diet or take medication that affects fluid balance, ask a clinician what your version of this advice should be before your next long day out.
